Bushfood and the Queens!
It's pride month queen!! It's time to rainbow up and celebrate love! There are a lot of reasons why this is a time to kick up your heels and paint the town rainbow, but if you've ever found yourself curious as to how this fabulicious month of celebration began, why it takes place in June, or why it's so important to us? Then read on!
What is Pride Month?
Every year in June, we take the time to embrace the diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex community. Initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," on the last Sunday in June, the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Attracting millions of participants worldwide, there are an array of spectacular celebrations including pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts! But it's not just a time to cut loose. It's also a time to reflect on just how far civil rights have progressed in half a century and an opportunity to stand up and rally against discrimination and violence! It'll make you proud to know that Australia is at the forefront of the fight toward true equality and inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community!
However, the origin of this celebration of love began in America, established as a way to honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. Starting in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, brave demonstrations were made by members of the gay community in response to a police raid. Patrons of the Stonewall, near lesbian and gay bars, and neighbourhood street people stood up and fought back when the police became violent. These riots are widely recognised as the turning point that shaped the gay liberation movement and the twentieth-century fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in the United States and the rest of the world!
What does it mean for us?
As a queer-owned and run business, this month means a lot to us. Growing up queer, there wasn't even a mention of gay people doing more than filling a stereotype. I (Hayden) was always focused on bettering the lives of others through social enterprise. So for a month to exist to highlight my community and the struggles we've gone through is something we're going to celebrate. Some of the most inspirational people in my life are on my team. They're here, queer, and they've battled homophobia day-in-day-out. Because of their endurance, I've been able to be so open! This is why as a business, I feel it's so important to show young people that queer lead companies exist. Showing them that being who you are doesn't have to hold you back and that we should celebrate everything the community has done to get us to where we are now. If these LGBTQIA+ rights had never been established, we probably wouldn't exist to share bush food with you today…
It's a month of showing pride, not just in a queer sense, but pride in resilience and endurance that's pretty unrivalled!
For the occasion we've release a Pride Box to celebrate this month with STYLE.
