Kurrajong is a large native tree that produces large, edible seed pods that are rich in protein and essential nutrients. Growing well inside in pots, one tree can produce as many pods which can be roasted and coated with spices for a healthy snack, or ground into a unique flour.
Imagine an indoor plant that feeds you!
Widely eaten by Aboriginal Australians, the bark, roots, flowers, and seed pods were all used. The edible tuber was eaten when young by Indigenous peoples, or the older roots were dub up in times of drought.
Harvesting: Remove seed pods from the tree Autumn/Winter (in Southern States), using gloves and a face mask as the husk contains small fibres that are irritable to the skin. Roast them at 180 degrees or until they begin 'popping'. Use a flame or a fire to scorch off fibres, and coat with spices for a nutritious treat from your household plant.
Growing Conditions: An exceptionally hardy native, this tree grows up to 30 metres high, so planting in a pot is recommended to maintain a smaller size. It tolerates both moist and dry soil, but prefers non-boggy areas. For best results, keep in direct sunlight, with moderately fertile soil.
