    River Mint Plant FAQ's 🌱

River Mint (Botanical name: Mentha australis) is a fantastic Australian native mint species. Growing across most of Australia, it's well suited to almost every Aussie climate from the dry inland to wet flood-plains. It grows to around 1-2 metres, and is less invasive than traditional mint, and thrives in both pots and garden beds. It's recommended to grow only one plant, and keep an eye on runners which will plant themselves across an entire garden. River Mint can be used as a substitute for regular mint, and can be used in teas, middle-eastern dishes, or to make amazing syrups for cocktails.

Grows across all of Australia, but struggles in high-humidity tropical regions (Far North QLD).

Harvest the leaves throughout the season. For an annual supply or for use in teas or middle-eastern dishes, try the leaves using a food dehydrator or an oven set at the coolest setting.

For best results, keep it in a well-watered or boggy area, as River Mint naturally occurs along river beds and flood plains.

Growing River Mint is quite straight forward. It's less invasive than traditional mint species, and dies back in the cooler times of the year.

During the end of summer, give your river mint a good prune, this will encourage new growth in the summer, and as a pro-tip, use a seaweed fertilizer like seasol or bury fish bones in the pot or garden, and you'll have a crazy amount of river mint.

With a strong minty flavour, it's more comparable to spearmint for it's sharpness with a strong bushy undernote. It's very minty!
