Blueberry Lily Plant FAQ's 🌱

Blueberry Lilys are a unique fruit with a deep indigo purple colour. The fresh fruit can be eaten fresh or used in jams, preserves, or similar to blueberries or strawberries. They're a small fruit, only growing up to 1cm in size, yet are rich in antioxidants and vitamins.

Disclaimer: Like all native foods Blueberry Lily (Dianella revoluta) edibility remains untested by Western science methods. We have tried the berries ourselves and think that they taste great and had no adverse side effects. As will all of the native foods we share, we rely on evidence of edibility through both common knowledge, historical records, as well as reputable sources like Northern Beaches Council. Some Dianella species are toxic, so please do not wild forage.

Wait until the berries turn a deep blue color and become plump and juicy. This usually occurs in late summer or early fall. Locate the fruit clusters on the plant. They will be growing on stems that extend above the foliage. Gently pull each fruit cluster from the stem with your fingers or use a pair of scissors to snip it off. Place the fruit clusters in a bowl or container. Rinse the fruit under cool running water to remove any dirt or debris. Enjoy the berries fresh, or use them in cooking, baking, or making jams and jellies. Note: Be sure to only harvest fruit from plants that you have positively identified as blue flax lilies, and never eat berries that are unripe, green, or have a bitter taste, as they may be toxic.

Fertilizing?
As with most bushfoods, use a high-quality native potting or soil mix, and fertilize every 6 - 12 months with a high-quality organic fertilizer. However, if grown in a pot, make sure you fertilize more frequently, and water fortnightly with a seaweed solution.

Soil?
Use a high-quality native soil mix.

Pruning?
The Blueberry Lily doesn't need to be pruned unless you want it to stay in shape. It can become a bit messy when it grows, so making sure to clip it back is important for the best results.

Common Problems for Blueberry Lilys:
Blueberry Lilys are relatively pest and disease free but occasionally a few problems can pop up such as Mealybugs or Aphids. Use a neem oil weekly until they disappear. Overwatering or underwatering is another common problem. If you find the leaves turning brown, please adjust the watering frequency.

This plant's tubers can be used similarly to potatoes, although their thin carrot shape can make them a bit difficult to use in a potato mash. Instead, wash them well, and slice thinly before frying for a crunchy topping, or roast in the oven for a turnip-like veggie.

The small, purple/blue fruit can be used fresh on yogurts or in smoothies, or can be used as an alternative to blueberries or strawberries in desserts, jams or sauces.
