FAQs

How do I use them?
So many ways! Try flavouring a curry with it, use in icecream or sorbet, flavour a tea or easily use to spice up a mulled wine. For more tips and recipes, visit our recipe page here.

What does it taste like?
Earthy, peppery, cinnamon-like taste on the front palate with herbaceous, spicy notes and developing heat on the back palate.

How much should I use?

For flavouring when cooking, 1 teaspoon should be enough. If using in preserves, or syrup, adjust to 1/2 teaspoon per jar or bottle.

Why is it so expensive compared to other spices?

If grown in a pot, using a native fertilizer should do the trick. They like low-phosphorus, so normal fertilizer might not do.

Where is it native to?

The woodlands and cool temperate climate of south-east Australia.

"Replaced all ground pepper

Pepperberry leaf has a beautiful sharp flavour. I've replaced any ground pepper and use this in my veggie soups, and more recently on a pork rub.

If you love sneezing it's also really good for that when you open up the packet :)

Aniseed Myrtle is a rare native with an unknown history due to a large loss in Traditional Knowledge. Anecdotally, it was used as an Aboriginal Tonic thought to have vitalizing effects. In recent history, it was harvested during WWII when anise flavouring was difficult to find,
